Let’s start with your name and what you do.

I’m Nikki and I’m a Senior Data Scientist. I analyze the data that’s collected in our research studies in an effort to better understand people’s everyday health. Some of my day-to-day responsibilities include writing analysis plans, summarizing and visualizing survey data, creating features that capture patterns in activity data, building models, and communicating results to clients.

Tell us about home.

I was born and raised in Gallup, New Mexico, which is a unique little town on Route 66 just outside the Navajo reservation. I lived in Santa Barbara for several years during grad school and my first year working at Evidation, and now I’m back in the Land of Enchantment, living in Albuquerque.

How’d you end up at here?

My original plan was to become an academic Professor in Neuroscience, but in grad school I came to realize that the things that I really loved doing — coding, data analysis, and visualization — are done less and less as you progress in your academic career. I knew that I wanted to transition into Data Science, and I was incredibly lucky that Evidation was hiring when I started looking for jobs because it turned out to be my dream job.

What’s been your best day (so far) at Evidation?

I genuinely love working at Evidation so it’s hard to choose a best day. Some of the days that stand out the most are our company & team onsites and our hackathons because I have so much fun spending time with the entire team.

Favorite book?

Books: Factfulness, Moment of Lift, Scarcity, Outliers

Do you have any fun (ok, weird) hobbies?

I enjoy painting, although I admittedly don’t do it often. I also enjoy reading and watching Netflix/Hulu, both of which I do much more often. My only hobbies that border on being weird are 3D-printing (almost exclusively brain-related things) and practicing tricks with our trained bunny. We also recently bought a mid-century modern “fixer-upper” so most of my weekends are happily spent working on home renovation projects.

What’s your favorite thing to do to earn points on Achievement?

If you could have one superpower, what would it be and why?

100% the ability to pause time so I could inject a little more leisure time into each day

Which came first, the chicken or the egg?
