Earn through your phone: the many types of reward apps

4 minutes

Earn cash for things you're already doing by downloading reward apps onto your phone.

Looking to earn some extra cash? You're not alone. Many phone-based reward programs make it easy for you to bring in some extra cash for activities you're already doing. At Evidation, we're here to help you get cash for sticking to behaviors that help you become your healthiest, happiest self. Here, we'll take a look at some of the best reward apps you can download on your phone today to help you begin earning.

Loyalty program rewards

Many companies—likely many that you already shop with—offer loyalty reward programs that you can use to earn discounts on products, cash back, and more. To find these programs, download the apps for stores you regularly patronize (like grocery stores, gas stations, etc.) to see if they offer a loyalty program that will reward you for your purchases. Pro tip: before you go out to eat at a restaurant, be sure to download the restaurant's app, if they have one. Many offer free, immediate rewards just for creating an account.

Health and fitness rewards

Whether you're working to improve your eating habits, increase your activity levels, or stick to other health-related goals, using health and fitness reward apps can help you stay focused and moving forward. At Evidation, we're proud to offer rewards while also giving you the chance to give back. When you download the Evidation app, you'll be asked what health data you'd like to share. Your privacy is our utmost priority, and you have the right to revoke sharing with our app at any time.

When you share your information, we'll analyze it to find patterns and insights that can help to guide your next steps in your health journey. You'll get personalized, content-based insights that can help you discover the small changes you can make that can make a big difference in your well-being. You'll also have the chance to participate in health studies, contributing to medical advancements that can result in positive change for people around the world. As you complete healthy behaviors—like tracking your food, tracking your movement using a wearable tracker, etc.—you'll earn points that you can exchange for cash or donate to charity.

Survey and opinion app rewards

Looking to earn some extra cash in your spare time? Taking surveys on your phone or computer can help you earn rewards. For most survey reward sites, you'll fill out surveys explaining your interests. At Evidation, we offer health surveys to help you earn cash rewards while providing us information that helps us personalize your health recommendations. Survey apps may offer the option to install tracking software on your device, allowing them to analyze your browsing history and offer surveys based on your online habits. From there, you'll get survey offers from companies interested in your opinions, and you'll get a pre-set amount of cash applied to your rewards account.

Gaming and entertainment rewards

Curious about playing your way to cash rewards? There are many apps that allow you to play games while boosting your bank account. Usually, you're not earning cash for actually playing games on these apps—you're earning cash for watching ads or taking surveys in between games. In some apps, however, users pay a small entry fee to compete with other users, and the winners then keep or split the pot.

Entertainment rewards can also go a long way to putting some extra money in your pocket. Entertainment apps can help you save money while doing what you love. Whether you choose to watch videos on your phone or use entertainment apps to earn points from amusement parks and movie theaters, it's smart to make money while you're having fun.

Eco-friendly rewards

Eco rewards can encourage you to do your part to help your community. Some eco-reward apps provide you with points for participating in eco-friendly behaviors. Other eco-friendly apps allow you to save money by connecting you with community resources. For example, the Blablacar app can connect you with people in your area who are interested in carpooling.

Travel rewards

Trying to travel on a budget? Using travel rewards apps can help you save serious cash. Check out Travel Freely, an app that can help you save up to $2,000 per year. The Miles app is another great option that can help you save money while you're on the go. With Miles, you'll get points for every mile you travel, no matter how you get there. This means the more you're on the go, the more you'll be able to earn.

Retail rewards

You're already spending money when you shop—you might as well get some cash back when you can! Apps like Ibotta and RetailMeNot can help you cash in on serious savings. Sometimes, you'll get points for simply scanning a receipt, even if you don't buy items that are specifically being promoted by the app you're using. Other times, you'll be able to cash in on special details for products that you want to try or normally buy. When you reach a certain threshold, you'll typically be able to choose from a few different options, including getting cash into your account, getting gift cards from the stores you normally shop at, or donating your rewards to charity.

Migraine tracking on Evidation: introducing Smart Reminders

2 minutes

We’ve developed a smart system to help detect recent and ongoing migraine symptoms for our members. Learn more about how it works and how you can track your migraines on Evidation!

Do you forget to log your migraine symptoms?

Introducing Smart Reminders, powered by an AI system designed to detect your recent migraines. This feature not only supports you in tracking your symptoms but also invites you to play an active role in shaping the future of migraine detection.

By responding to timely alerts and keeping your daily logs up to date, you help us learn and adapt to your unique patterns, paving the way for more personalized and accurate insights.

Regular tracking also helps you keep track of your migraines and possible triggers. You can use this to help prevent future migraines, or share the information with your medical provider to help with treatment options.

How it works

The Smart Reminders feature looks at data from your daily symptom logs, demographic information in your profile (like age and gender), and data from your connected wearable devices (such as steps, sleep, and heart rate) to determine if you might have experienced symptoms.

This data is used to help identify patterns of a recent or on-going migraine.

Once we detect a possible migraine, we deliver personalized alerts and follow-ups to remind you to log your symptoms. This way, you don’t have to remember to write everything down when you do have a migraine.

We’ll share this data with you in your monthly reports (found in the My Health tab). That way you’ll have what you and your medical team need to better manage your symptoms and treatment.

Key features

  • Timely Alerts: If you forget to log your symptoms on a day we detect patterns in your data consistent with a migraine, the Smart Reminders will nudge you to make sure your records stay complete and consistent for your next checkup.
Card in thenotifying the user we have deteted possible migraine and asking them if they are experiencing symptoms Evidation app
  • Post-Migraine Check-Ins: If you forget to log, we’ll follow up after a detected or reported migraine to track your recovery and see if you’re still experiencing symptoms.

Empowering personalized healthcare

Your participation is key to making Smart Reminders as effective as possible. By wearing your device consistently—both during the day and at night—and responding to symptom logs and alerts, you provide valuable data that helps us understand your patterns better. Over time, this collaboration leads to more personalized and accurate predictions tailored to you.

At Evidation, we’re always looking for innovative ways to empower our members. Smart Reminders is more than just a tool—it’s a partnership. Together, we’re building a smarter, more responsive way to manage migraines and support your health journey.

Migraine tracking on Evidation

MigraineSmart is a program on the Evidation app that helps members better understand and manage their migraines through better data and actionable insights. The program allows you to track your symptoms, provides tips and insights, and provides you with a report to share with your medical provider.

Announcing the new healthy habits score on Evidation

2 minutes

Introducing the new healthy habits score on Evidation. The healthy habits score was designed by our data scientists to estimate your current level of cardiovascular and metabolic fitness.

Healthy habits score overview

We’re excited to introduce a major new feature coming to the Evidation App: the healthy habits score. The healthy habits score has been designed by Evidation’s data scientists to estimate your current level of cardiovascular and metabolic fitness based on data from the wearable devices you have connected to the Evidation App. You’ll receive an updated score each week plus meaningful recommendations for how to improve your score based on what we see in your data.

This new score will be available for some members starting early December. And we’ll continue to expand to all eligible members over the next few months.

If you want to be one of the first to see this new healthy habits score, be sure to connect and use one of the devices listed below and grant permission for Evidation to have access to the required data.

How it works

The healthy habits score uses a variety of measurements commonly found on wearable devices to provide you with a numeric score between 1 and 100. Higher scores are generally better and are correlated with higher levels of cardiovascular and metabolic fitness.

We calculate your score based on the following measurements and factors:

  • Activity and Exercise: Daily average step count and daily average minutes spent exercising in specific heart rate zones
  • Sleep: Average sleep duration during your “main” sleep period
  • Physiological: Average resting heart rate
  • Demographic: Age and gender. Note that this category is used only to put your other measurements in context. Measurements in the other categories vary in relation to age and gender, so it’s important that we control for these variables when building personalized recommendations on how to improve your score.

Frequently asked questions

How much data do I need in order to receive a score?

In order to send your score, we need both the right types of data, as well as sufficient data density (enough data to calculate your score accurately). Currently, our score only supports Fitbit, Apple Watch, Garmin, Withings, and Oura devices that capture heart rate, steps, sleep, and exercise. In order to calculate your score, we need 21 days of data out of each 28 day period to ensure an accurate score.

Note that the healthy habits score uses exercise as an input to calculate your score. Some devices auto log activities and exercise, while others require manual logging. In order to ensure you get the most accurate score possible, we recommend that if you have a device that does not auto log activities and exercise sessions, that you log these manually to ensure they’re accounted for within the Evidation app.

I’m a very active person and I received a low score, why?

Data that’s fetched from your wearable device provides only a partial view of your cardiovascular and metabolic health. Since the healthy habits score is meant to be an estimate of your general cardiovascular and metabolic fitness, we recommend focusing less on the current number and more on how you can improve your score over time. Also note that the healthy habits score is meant only for general health and wellness purposes and is not meant to treat or diagnose any health conditions.

How often will I get a healthy habits score?

You’ll see a new score in your My Health tab weekly, so be sure to check your app often. Please note that while the score updates weekly, the data used to calculate your score is from the 28 days prior. This means if you incorporate the recommendations given to you in any given week, you could see a lift in your score, but you won't see the full projected impact until you've incorporated the changes for the full 28 days.

What is the Sleep Regularity Index?

5 minutes

We’re introducing a new insights feature: Sleep Regularity Index. Eligible members will now receive monthly insights about their sleep regularity — an important metric for staying healthy.

The Sleep Regularity Index (SRI) is a measure used in sleep research to gauge the consistency and regularity of a person’s sleep-wake schedule. It’s calculated based on factors such as bedtime, wake-up time, and sleep duration.

Researchers and healthcare professionals use the SRI to assess the quality and stability of an individual’s sleep-wake cycle. Irregular sleep patterns have been associated with various health issues, including mood disorders, impaired cognitive function, and cardiovascular diseases.

A higher SRI means that a person has more consistent or regular sleep patterns, while a lower SRI suggests more variability or irregularity.

Understanding your Sleep Regularity Index can help you make choices that improve your sleep schedule and overall well being. That’s why our team of data scientists went to work to deliver this valuable insight to our members.

How we calculate your sleep regularity index

SRI can be calculated in different ways. Evidation uses the probability that you are in the same state (awake or asleep) at any two times 24 hours apart.

To explain this, we have to get a bit technical. But hang in there, it’s worth it!

To get the most accurate picture possible, we look at your sleep data to find the time you went to sleep and the time you woke up each day over a 30-day period.

We use that information to figure out the hours you were asleep or awake at the same time on 2 consecutive days (2 days in a row). The following chart is an example of sleep data over 7 days.  Each area from left to right represents 1 hour of 1 day. When the person was asleep, the area is filled in blue.

bar graph showing hours an individual was asleep over a 7 day period
When a person was asleep over a period of ~7 days

For each hour of the day, we calculate how likely you are to be in the same state (awake or asleep) on consecutive days. We then average the values across all hours in the day to get your SRI.

As SRI is just a number, we provide a more detailed view of your sleep patterns through the daily sleep profile. The daily sleep profile is a plot of your likelihood to be asleep throughout the 24 hours of the day. The x axis (the horizontal line) is the time, and the y axis (the vertical line) is how likely you are to be asleep at that time.

Bar graph showing a person's likelihood to be asleep at specific hours throughout the night.

Very simply, the higher the bar, the higher your likelihood to be asleep. The lower the bar, the lower your likelihood to be asleep, in other words, the higher your likelihood to be awake.

Middle-sized bars are for more “uncertain” times of the day when you’re neither very likely to be asleep nor very likely to be awake. It’s super important to be mindful of these times as this is when your sleep is the most inconsistent.

For many individuals, the daily sleep profile will look somewhat similar:

  • it will be close or equal to 100% in the night time, between midnight and 6am, when they’re most likely sleeping
  • it will be close or equal to 0% in the day time, between 9am and 9pm, when they’re most likely awake, going about their day

The most interesting part is what happens between the high probability and low probability zones!

  • people who are highly regular sleepers have more “all or nothing” profiles—at a certain hour they go from being awake 100% of the time to asleep 100% of the time
  • other people will have a pretty gradual decrease/increase in probability to be asleep: these are the more irregular sleepers

Daily Sleep Profile for a very regular sleeper (SRI = 99%)

Bar graph showing the Daily Sleep Profile for a very irregular sleeper
Daily Sleep Profile for a very irregular sleeper (SRI = 53%)

It’s important to identify these “uncertain times” where your sleep is not regular. This is where you can work to move towards a more regular sleep schedule. Remember, going to bed and waking up at around the same time each day helps keep you healthy and well rested.

How do I interpret my Sleep Regularity Index?

The Sleep Regularity Index is defined as “the probability for an individual to be in the same state (awake or asleep) at any two times 24 hours apart”. So, if your Sleep Regularity Index is 92, it means that there’s a 92% chance that you’ll be awake or asleep at the same time each day.

Generally speaking, a Sleep Regularity Index in the 90s or above is considered good and healthy.

How do I get my Sleep Regularity Index?

In order to receive a sleep regularity score from Evidation you must do the following:

  1. Use a wearable device that logs sleep and connect it to your Evidation app. Make sure you enable sharing of sleep data when you connect your device.
  2. Wear your device while sleeping for at least 20 of the last 30 days. We need to see your observed sleep in order to accurately calculate the Sleep Regularity Index. Too few data points will make our calculations inaccurate.

Click here to learn more about connecting your device.

How often will I get my Sleep Regularity Index?

If you follow the steps above, we’ll send your Sleep Regularity Index to your My Health tab monthly.

Remember to regularly sync your device with Evidation. This guarantees we’ll have the most accurate information for providing you insights like the Sleep Regularity Index.

Optimize your physical health with these 5 metrics from Evidation

4 minutes

Evidation provides health insights based on your activity level, stress level, sleep, mental wellness, and more

Information is key when it comes to figuring out how you can take your physical health to the next level. At Evidation, our team is proud to offer you the tools necessary to track and analyze your health-related data, using your personal metrics to provide recommendations, information, and suggestions that allow you to make informed decisions that support your well-being.

Evidation's health monitoring capabilities

Using the Evidation app is simple—we're here to help you understand the health data you're already tracking, and reward you for actions that support your health.

We start by asking your permission to utilize the data you're already tracking through apps like Fitbit or Apple Health. Our app will then ask you questions to help us learn more about you and your goals, as well as offer surveys and articles tailored to your personal health needs. With your permission, we'll use your data both to provide you with information and suggested action steps that will support your health, as well connect you with opportunities to contribute to research that supports the development of modern medicine.

Key metrics for physical health optimization

In today's age of information overload, it can be tough to figure out what health information actually matters. At Evidation, we're here to provide you with the support that you need to make the most of your health data. Here, we'll take a look at the metrics that are most important for you to keep track of in order to optimize your health.

Role of activity tracking in health improvement

We all know that it's recommended that we get 10,000 steps a day, and using a step tracker is a great way to encourage yourself to increase your activity. At Evidation, our activity tracking allows you to see the ways that movement is improving your health.

New research shows that people who receive prompts to keep up with physical activity took an average of over 800 steps more than people who did not receive similar prompts.

Keeping track of your activity throughout the day and week can help you pinpoint the times when you're less active, which may make it easier to find ways to add more activity to your day, according to Harvard Health.

Sleep data for better physical health

Understanding your sleep data can provide you with the insight you need to get better rest. Most sleep trackers can tell you how much time you're spending in each stage of sleep, helping you to understand how your energy levels are affected by the time you spend asleep each night.

Tracking your sleep data can also provide your health care provider with valuable information in the event that you're experiencing difficulty sleeping. While sleep trackers don't take the place of a sleep study, they can work to help your doctor determine whether it's possible that you're experiencing abnormal sleep disturbances.

Sleep trackers can also help you to maintain good sleep hygiene, as you can get crystal-clear data on the time you go to bed each night and wake up each morning. This can help take away the temptation to put off going to bed or to scroll on your phone once you lie down.

Stress levels and their impact on well-being

Stress can affect all systems in your body, and understanding how your stress levels fluctuate can help you learn more about how to use stress management techniques to support your health.

Tracking your stress levels can help you see if your stress is related to particular situations, as well as whether your stress levels could become a health concern. Stress that isn't managed well can lead to several health issues, including heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and high blood pressure.

Nutrition tracking and its influence on physical health

Life is hectic, and it can be tough to stay on top of your daily nutrition habits. Simply tracking what you eat—even if you're not making any changes to your normal routine—can help you spot connections between your food and your health.

Nutrition tracking can also help you learn more about what foods help you feel your best. You may find that you have your best workouts after eating a complex carbohydrate-heavy meal, or you may find that eating a large amount of protein right before you go to sleep makes it harder for you to get a restful night’s sleep. Many people are surprised to find that tracking their nutrition makes it easier for them to understand other aspects of their health.

Mental wellness metrics for holistic health improvement

It can be easy to forget to check in with yourself throughout the day, but doing so is important in understanding how your habits and activities are affecting your mental health. Evidation regularly asks you simple questions about your mood and well-being. By taking a second or two to tap an answer, you'll be well on your way to learning more about how your activities—from exercise to sleep and everything in between—positively or negatively affect your mental health.

The information gathered from tracking your mood can help provide your mental health care provider with valuable insight into how you're coping with stress, as well as how different activities affect your well-being. You may find it helpful to pull up your mood tracker during therapy sessions, as this can provide you with clues as to how you and your care provider can work together to support your mental health.

Sleep debt insights on Evidation

3 minutes

Introducing sleep debt insights. Track your sleep debt and improve your sleep patterns with Evidation. Learn more.

Evidation Members tell us they love seeing insights in the app such as how their sleep and mood are connected or how their mood or sleep impacts their activity levels. So we’re always working to provide new and valuable health insights for our members.

To that end, we’re kicking off an exciting new project… 8 new insight types in 8 weeks!

Here, we’ll dive into the first of these new insights — sleep debt! Keep an eye out for more insight types coming soon.

What is sleep debt?

At a high level, sleep debt is just a measure of how much you sleep compared to how much you ideally should sleep.

There are two kinds of sleep debt:

  • long term sleep debt that you accumulate over months and years, and
  • short term sleep debt that you accrue over days and weeks.

Both are important, but the measurement we provide members focuses on short term sleep debt — specifically sleep debt calculated over the last 14 days.

Learn more about sleep debt and the associated risks here

How Evidation tracks your sleep debt

Here’s the overview of how Evidation calculates sleep debt:

  1. First we estimate your “ideal” nightly sleep duration based on sleep data logged on your sleep tracker. This number is personalized to you, but for almost everyone this number will be between 7 and 9 hours of sleep per night.
  2. We then look at your actual sleep duration over the past 14 days. For each day, we take the difference between your ideal sleep and your actual sleep to calculate a daily sleep debt score.
  3. The daily sleep debt scores are then adjusted to account for the fact that recent sleep debt is more impactful than sleep debt you accrued far in the past. For example, sleeping only 2 hours last night will make you feel terrible today if you’re used to consistently sleeping 8 hours each night, but if you had a night where you slept 2 hours a week ago, it would impact you far less today, assuming the other nights you slept your usual 8 hours.
  4. Finally, we take the adjusted daily sleep debt values and sum them up over the last two weeks. This is your total short term sleep debt.

How do I interpret my sleep debt score?

The graph you’ll see in the evidation app shows four different pieces of information:

  1. Your daily sleep duration over the past week
  2. Your ideal sleep duration (the dotted horizontal line)
  3. Your daily sleep debt (the red bars that are stacked on top of your daily sleep duration on days you slept less than your ideal sleep duration)
  4. Your total sleep debt calculated as discussed above (the final red bar)

How do I get my sleep debt score?

In order to receive a sleep debt score you must do the following:

  1. Use a wearable device that logs sleep and connect it to the Evidation platform. Make sure you enable sharing of sleep data when you connect your device.
  2. Wear your device while you sleep as often as possible. In order to receive your sleep debt score, we need at least 10 days of sleep data every two weeks. Too few data points will make our calculations inaccurate.

How often will I get my sleep debt score?

For now, you’ll see your sleep debt score weekly. In the future, we’ll begin updating your sleep score daily so you can better track your score over time. Knowing your sleep debt score makes it possible to take steps to improve your sleep and get the rest you need to feel your best.

At Evidation, we believe in the power of real-life experiences to improve healthcare. That's why we partner with various organizations to offer clinical trials in areas like diabetes, migraine, and more, allowing our members to share their insights on new treatments and health challenges.

However, in a recent survey on our app, only 44% of Evidation Members were aware of these opportunities.

Unlocking health insights: our clinical trial series

To bridge this gap, we launched a comprehensive 3-part clinical trial series in June 2023:

  1. Assessing Knowledge: We gauged our members' understanding of clinical trials through a survey.
  2. Educational Journey: Engaging videos, images, and blog posts were shared to enlighten members about clinical trials.
  3. Knowledge Boost: A follow-up quiz measured the impact of our educational content on members' understanding.

Insights from our community

Here are some key findings from the survey:

  • Only 28% of members felt "very familiar" or "extremely familiar" with clinical trials.
  • Surprisingly, 61% expressed willingness to participate in future clinical trials.
  • Educational content significantly improved members' understanding of clinical trial processes and eligibility criteria.

Tailoring trials to your lifestyle

We understand the importance of convenience in participation. That's why we offer virtual trials, allowing you to contribute from the comfort of your home. In fact, over two-thirds of our members prefer virtual trials over in-person ones.
